The history of San Marcos, Texas is intertwined with the history of its sister city, Austin. In 1836, when Mexico ceded Texas to the United States as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, Austin became the capital of Texas. The town was founded on a small creek in what is now Parker County by Stephen F. Austin and his friends John Braidwood and James Kenedy. A year later, in 1837, Austin designated San Marcos as the temporary seat of government for all new Mexican territory east of the Rio Grande. In 1840, Austin annexed portions of Comal and Williamson counties to form Travis County. As a result, San Marcos became one of the most populous cities in Texas. From 1840 until 1851, San Marcos was also its own county courthouse and jail facilities were built on Congress Avenue (now First Street). However, during this time period much action took place within Travis County that has has long been remembered here in San Marcos: The first cattle drive fromCorpus Christi occurs in 1846; Pecos War begins in1847; The founding of UT atAustin begins in 1881; and finally Reconstruction begins following the American Civil War ended in 1865 with victory for Northern forces over Confederate forces. Due to these events and more throughout our city's lengthy history it can be hard to determine where one event ends and another begins – but that's how it has always been here!
In 1836, San Marcos was founded as an Indian trading post by brothers José and Vicente María de Jesús. The town prospered for a time due to its proximity to the Comanches and Kiowa, but soon became embroiled in a series of conflicts with the settlers. A militia was set up in 1849 to deal with the growing violence, but this only exacerbated the conflict. In 1861, after Mexican President Santa Anna ordered all Anglo settlers out of Mexico, San Marcos began to grow rapidly as people arrived from Texas looking for new land. By 1870, almost two-thirds of the population had moved into the town. In 1881, tensions between Mexicans and Anglo Americans boiled over when a group of American cowboys invaded San Marcos and burned down several churches. This prompted Mexican president Porfirio Díaz to order military action against the Texans. The battle that ensued is known as Battle of San Marcos (1881). The Texans managed to drive back their opponents and take control of most of San Marcos before retreating back across the border into Oklahoma. However, some remain in town today reminders of what happened during that fateful day.
