Commodore Perry also ordered all horses seized from any Mexican prisoners if found (), thus ending horse trading among Texans prior to Texas annexation by Mexico two years later! The town of just over 10,000 people was founded in 1845 by General Antonio Lomas and his wife María de la Concepción. The Lomas family had to leave San Marcos because of the Mexican-American War.
