The coffee industry in San Marcos, Texas began in the early 1800s. The first coffee beans were grown and roasted by Mexicans on the Rancho del Rio near what is now downtown San Marcos. This area was part of the Mexican land grant given to Garcia de Cuellar, a wealthy Spanish nobleman, in 1821. At that time, there were two small villages in San Marcos: El Paso and Presidio. In 1886, Englishman John Brown started a coffee plantation called La Paz Connections at El Paso Boulevard and FM 446. In 1896, he sold his interest to American entrepreneur J.G. Searle who renamed it Searle Coffee Company Incorporated. In 1906, the company moved its operations from El Paso to San Marcos where it remains today as part of Hearst Corporation’s empire of media businesses including The Chronicle (founded 1868), Scripps-Howard Newspapers (1909), KTVU Channel 6 (1949), and KNX Radio Station 990 kHz (now KNX Newsradio 950 kHz). In 1912-13, Don Bell founded Bell Telephone Laboratories with US$1 million from his father Samuel Morse Limited which would later become America's largest telephone company San Marcos was also home to one of America's first radio stations when KDKA Radiothon started September 12th 1920 at First Presbyterian Church on Main Street where WSM DJ Reddy entertained listeners for three days nonstop before moving to studios on Commerce Street next door on October 17th 1922

In 1846, a group of American settlers, led by Captain John B. Maverick, arrived in San Marcos, then part of the Mexican state of Coahuila and Chihuahua. The town was named for General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna, who had been removed from power in Mexico City and west to Texas in 1845 following a failed rebellion against Spanish rule. The first post office was established in San Marcos on July 21, 1846. By 1850, San Marcos had a population of about eighty people. A school was built in 1851 and a courthouse in 1857. The town became an independent municipality on March 20, 1861. On November 15th of that year, San Marcos surrendered to Confederate forces during the Mexican-American War. In 1898 it became an important U.S.-Mexican border town when the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo set aside land east of the Rio Grande as part Sinaloa County being formed from parts of Coahuila and Chihuahua counties
In 1836, San Marcos was founded by Antonio López de Santa Anna as the first town in present-day Texas. The site of the town is now a part of Austin. The original settlers were Mexican grants from Mexico. In 1843, the United States acquired Texas from Mexico and renamed it for General Sam Houston.
