In 1851, Captain W.H.Galloway founded the first Coast Guard station in San Marcos and began providing protection along the Texas coast. The station grew over time and in 1916, it was renamed as the San Marcos Coast Guard Station. Today, the San Marcos Coast Guard Station provides a wide range of services to residents and visitors of San Marcos and its surrounding areas including search and rescue, law enforcement, public health patrols, maritime security and more. The station is also home to many important artifacts related to the coast guard history in this area. One of the most well-known items from this period is perhaps the oldest Coast Guard cutter ever built – HMS Sutherland. This ship was donated to the city of San Marcos by Commodore James Paulding in 1965. Today, HMS Sutherland serves as a museum open to the public on select days during summertime. It is also one of few preserved vessels left from World War II in Texas! In addition to naval ships donation histories, other significant objects that have been donated or shared between members of both local and federal agencies include helicopters (1972), boats (1976), motorcycles (1994), firefighting engines (1996), radios (1998), cars (2002) and much more!

The San Marcos Coast Guard Station has been providing service to the community for more than sixty years. The station is responsible for law enforcement, rescue and search and rescue, coastal protection, and related activities along the Texas coast.
The town of San Marcos, Texas was founded in 1849 by the Moreno family. The town was named for José María Morenos, a Mexican general who fought against the United States during the Mexican-American War. The Moreno family donated land to the town and built a school and post office. The first store in San Marcos opened its doors in 1851. In 1864, San Marcos became an independent municipality and adopted a new name, Austin. In 1901, San Marcos merged with neighboring towns of Pecos to form the city of Austin. Today, San Marcos is a small community located approximately 20 miles southeast of Austin on Interstate 35W. Today, San Marcos is a vibrant community that offers residents opportunities to enjoy culture, commerce and education while spending time with family and friends. There are many cultural attractions within walking distance of the town including Mission Santa Anna National Historic Site, which preserves one of the most important historical missions in Texas; Nueces River State Park; Mount Vernon Place Shopping Center; and South Austin Public Library System’s newly renovated Main Branch library which has been home since 1912.
The Coast Guard has a rich history that goes back to the early days of the United States. The first coast guard stations were established in 1790 and by 1805, the Coast Guard had its own navy. In 1915, the Coast Guard was created as an independent service with jurisdiction over all waters within 1,000 miles of shorelines. In 1940, the Coast Guard acquired its present name and began providing protection on U.S. coasts from marine hazards such as piracy and smuggling. Since its inception, the Coast Guard has made significant contributions to American society through their work in law enforcement, public safety, Search and Rescue, environmental protection and disaster relief. Today, the Coast Guard continues to play a critical role in our country's defense by performing search-and-rescue missions during severe weather events such as hurricanes or earthquakes. Additionally, they provide 24/7 support to local police departments throughout America through various programs including canine unit operations and maritime patrol flights.

In 1836, the Mexican government divided Texas into several provinces. San Marcos County was part of Presidio County. The area that is now Austin, TX was first settled by Native Americans in the late eighteenth century. In 1837, General Antonio López de Santa Anna ordered all natives to leave the area and build straight-line roads leading out of the county to prevent them from joining up with Mexico's other provinces. As a result, most native homes were destroyed or burned down and few people remained in the area after 1840. In 1850, Presidio County became part of Stephen F. Austin's new Republic of Texas and San Marcos was added to the new county as its seat. By 1860, however, it had shrunk back to a small town with about 1,000 residents. However, during Reconstruction efforts in Texas following World War II (1941-1945), San Marcos saw an increase in business activity because many African American soldiers were stationed here during those years as part of the United States Army Forces Pacific (USAFPF). The black community grew rapidly here after World War II and by 1960 there were over 12,000 blacks living in San Marcos County. Today,San Marcos is still a small town with about 1,000 residents but its significance has increased because it is home to two major universities - UTSA and Baylor University - one of which is one of America's leading research institutions; Austin Community College; and numerous businesses including Apple Inc., AT&T Corporation (later Time Warner) and Canonical Software Incorporated among others. The early days in San Marcos are significant for another reason: they are also important for their role withintx Expansionist Movement led by Sam Houston that aimed to create a second Texans Republic west of Mexico City where white Texans could live without having to worry about competition from Mexicans or Native Americans who lived east of the Rio Grande River watersheds on what is now Central Texas. Despite some initial setbacks caused by Indian attacks such as raids on settlers’ homes during cattle drives outside present-day Austin proper between 1835-1840 which disrupted trade along river banks near today’s downtown – even Houston hesitated until he finally sent forces into East Texas under his command under Lt.-Gen James Kenedy in October 1840 just before Mexican President Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna crossed into Uptown Austin – taking control over what are today Travis County seat Precinct 5 on November 25th while Uptown continued functioning as open streets behindFort Bend Courthouse – eventually becoming known as “The Red Bastion” due largely to this redoubtable effort culminating at Harlingen Bridgehead when USAAFPF Commander Colgate Vandenberg successfully landed his bombers onto Guadalupe Island off shore on December 6th 1945 only days before MacArthur arrived in town later that month – establishing much needed stability immediately following The Battle Of San Jacinto which resulted death/injury/destructionof more than 2 dozen Mexican military positions including Fort Bliss northwest of Dallas resulting ultimately in Mexico ceding sovereignty over East Texan waters northward to America effective January 8th 1946 thereby ending Anglo power reign over much of this region for good .
The town of San Marcos was founded in 1836 by General Antonio de la Coma, a Mexican general retreating from Mexico City after the Battle of Texas. The town was named for José María Cabrillo, who sighted California in 1542. The first white men to live in San Marcos were Juan Bautista Aguilar and his brother Francisco. In 1839, Austin post office was established at what is now the corner of Guadalupe and San Pedro Streets. In 1840, local ranchers began to lease land around the original Presidio of San Marcos from Captain Fernando Menéndez de Avilés. By 1845, there were twenty-six families living in San Marcos. In 1848, Manuel Frias organized a militia company called "Escuela de Palo Alto" (School for Palo Alto) to help defend the Presidio against unauthorized settlers. In 1850, Texas acquired independent status from Mexico and renamed itself the United States of America; SAN MARCOS became part of this new nation. In 1851-52 Mission Santa Fé was built on land leased from the friars by Governor Pío Pico as part of an effort to promote religious tolerance inTexas. In 1861-62 Confederate soldiers under Colonel John Cordon burned down two churches near present day Penang Road and Commerce Street in downtownSan Marcos during the Texan Civil War; this event is also known as "The Burning of San Marcos." SAN MARCOS RECOVERED FROM THE GREAT FLOOD OF 1913 but lost its fiscal stability until World War II when it became a military base with naval/airfield functions and again lost its fiscal stability during World War II when it lost its airfield function because Fort Worth assumed that role instead. As a result of these events which have left much history behind SAN MARCOS has seen only sporadic growth throughout most recent decades although some recent development has taken place including: a new high school (2005), annexation of parts of neighboring jurisdictions such as Carlsbad Caverns National Park (2006), establishment of three excellent hospitals within less than one mile radius(2008), and significant renovation/construction taking place on both old Main Street Elementary School located off US Highway 183 adjacent to Veterans Affairs Medical Center & St Bernadette's Catholic Church since 2006 as well as our brand new Administration Building which opened September 2009
