San Marcos, Texas is a small town located in southern Travis County, Texas. The population was 10,471 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit San Marcos were explorers from Mexico who traversed the region in 1541 looking for new routes to California. In 1836, during the Mexican-American War, General Antonio López de Santa Anna's army passed through San Marcos and burned it to the ground as evidence of his insurgency against Spanish rule. In 1885, San Marcos became a municipality with a population of 513 residents when it merged with nearby Richmond. At that time, it was one of only two towns in American TX without congressional representation (the other being Clifton). In 1925, San Marcos annexed much of Kerrville which had been detached by virtue of its annexation by Bexar County (itself formed on October 1 that year from parts of three previous county lines). As part of this annexation process, Kerrville relinquished all claims to land east or north of the city limits which would form what is now east Austin. In 1966 then-Mayor Lewis Flowers declared a local emergency due to Hurricane Agnes which destroyed large swaths of central Austin and caused widespread destruction throughout Travis County and beyond. Byakuya Watanabe served as Mayor from 1980 until his retirement in 1993 after serving six terms; he is also considered one of the longest-serving mayors in Austin history. A $1 million bond issue approved by voters in November 1994 funded many projects within city boundaries such as infrastructure renewal and improving public schools; these projects continue to be funded today under mayor Art Acevedo’s leadership. In 2002 Mayor Wim Gardner appointed Lake O’Neill Watershed Manager Tom Fenton; during Fenton’s tenure water usage decreased 25 percent while fish populations increased along Withlacoochee Creek due to improved water management techniques used by Parks & Recreation Department staff; current Water Management Plan updates are underway based on results from recent field surveys conducted along Withlacoochee Creek

The Ethiopian Empire was the first to make coffee beans and drink it formally in 1493 AD. The Dutch East India Company started trading with Ethiopia in 1655 and began to trade coffee with Europe. In 1776, the British captured Fort Ticonderoga and took possession of much of New York City. They were interested in the slave trade and started importing African slaves to work on their plantations in America. The Dutch continued to trade with Africa until 1802 when they decided not to continue because they could not compete with British traders who had became more expensively resourceful. In 1796, Nicholas-Jacques Conte (1746-1804) founded a small roaster located at Caffè Rialto in Rome that concentrated on espresso coffees only. He soon realized that this type of coffee would be more popular than regular Arabica beans so he introduced this new variety into European markets under the name Italian Roast Coffee or American Oats since American roasters were beginning to emerge at this time In 1805, Giovanni Perotti patented an improved version of Turkish coffee which he called Italian Roast Coffee or Pecorino Roasts due to his ownership of a small pithy business near Piacenza, Italy called Pecorino's Cheese Shop where he sold cheese made from raw milk from cows grazing on a green meadow near Piacenza . On October 5th 1861 Johann Christoph Hensel von Eisenerode (1752-1824), a German nobleman who immigrated to Italy and acquired citizenship there, opened a small cafe at No 10 via dei Castelli Nuovi in Milan serving Italian roast coffee made from whole bean beans ground by himself and his assistant Niccolò Albini (1768-1847). This cafe served as the launching pad for what would become known as Italian Coffee Society - now part of Associazione Nazionale Mario Batali - which was founded by Von Eisenerode on November 20th 1865 along with Luigi Pirri (1835-1912) – also originallyfrom Germany – as president while Henri Becquerel (baptized December 3rd 1837 – died May 4th 1906) served as secretary general From here on things quickly spiraled out: In 1870 Gianni Boccadoro established La Caffetterianear Turin; Luchino Visconti inaugurated La Casa del Gusto within months; Enrico Caruso enteredprising about 1890; Alfred Dallepierifounded Guglielmo Marconi's Radio Corporation 1895; Cesare Pavoliniopened Casa delle Misure e cantine di Riunione nel 1901). By 1915 all these cafes represented about 60% of all café transactions throughout Italy." In 1881, the town was renamed San Marcos after General Antonio López de Santa Anna. Because of its location on the Mexican-American border, San Marcos experienced some tension during the late 1800s. On one occasion, a band of bandits attacked the town, resulting in several injuries and three deaths. The city's economy has continued to grow throughout the years, with numerous businesses opening up in recent decades such as restaurants, nightlife venues and medical clinics. The city is home to two universities: UT Austin (which was founded in 1912) and SMU (founded in 1918).
