The name "San Juan" means "Island of the Saints." The first post office in San Juan was established on July 20, 1847. The current post office was established on December 7, 1907. The first settler in San Juan was Aron McLaughlin who arrived in 1848 and named it after his home island of Islay in Scotland. He also built a ferry across the Trinity River to carry goods and passengers between San Juan and Austin. The town grew quickly due to its location near trade routes and mineral interests including those of John Denton Phipps who founded the city of Commerce in 1859. The Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway was founded in 1869. In 1902, it was merged into the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad. The San Juan County seat of San Juan (then known as New Braunfels) was established in 1899.
