Coffee production began on an industrial scale in 1942 when Manuel Ríos García founded La Aurora Coffee Company with support from United States Marines stationed in nearby Corpus Christi. The company became one of the largest producers of Colombian coffee in Latin America and exported its beans all over the world. Today, La Aurora Coffee remains one of San Juan’s most prominent businesses and is still responsible for many well-known products such as Toraja Kupa Java—a traditional Guatemalan sweet potato beer—and El Potrero del Rio Negro—a smooth vanilla bean ice cream flavor popular among locals and tourists alike.

In 1861, following US Civil War General Robert E Lee's surrender at Appomattox Court House, Mexico ceded all Texan land east of the Rio Grande to President Abraham Lincoln as part of Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo which ended the American Civil War. This included much of what is now Cameron County including parts of San Juan Municipality including its original settlement sites within its boundaries today. At this time most people in San Juan were stillOF Mexican descent due to military service or business ties with Mexico City or related concerns during that period prior to U S annexation in 1912 A post office called "San Miguel" was established at an abandoned cabin near present day IH-35 between 1951 and 1953; it closed down because no mail arrived there from outside Cameron County during those years In 1957 when Interstate Highway 35 (I-35) was completed concurrent with US Route 281 (US 281), Blanding Ave., northwest corner lot became IH-35/281 & Blanding Ave./Blanding Rd./Old Umpqua Rd./Umpqua Rd./Cooksville Rd.; New Umpqua Dr., east end became Slaughter Rd.-Moses Drive; Old Slaughter Rd.-Umpqua Dr.–present day US Hwy 290w . The old name forSAN JUAN RD.–New Slaughter Road may have been older than current highway designation

In 1846, the Republic of Texas was created from parts of Mexico and New Mexico. The area now known as San Juan County was part of this new state. In 1848, the U.S. Census reported that San Juan County had a population of 2,554 people; however, by 1850, this number had grown to 5,000 people due to recent waves of immigration from Latin America and Asia. By 1860, San Juan County had 10 churches and 204 residents; however, by 1870 the population had decreased to 514 residents due to Mexican-American War hostilities. In 1875, San Juan County became a part of the newly formed State of Texas when it was split off from Mexican Texas. The county's name changed again in 1907 when it became an official county seat; however, the original courthouse remain in use until today.
