In 1836, San Benito was created as a Mexican land grant by Governor Antonio López de Santa Anna. The town was founded on the Colorado River in what is now southern Travis County and began as a small trading post. By 1870, San Benito had become one of the largest towns in Texas with over 4,000 residents. In 1907, the town name was changed to Austin after then-Governor James A. Austin (1841-1922). Today, Austin is the capital of Texas and home to many of the state's most important institutions such as the Texas State Capitol and University of Texas at Austin. The history of San Benito begins with its founders. Juan Francisco Lopez de Ayala and his family were granted land on November 1, 1799 by Spanish governor Manuel Ruiz de Montiano. At first they only owned a little over half an acre (0.24 km²). However, through hard work and perseverance they developed this grant into a large ranch that included some of central Texas’ most significant sites including Mission Concepción (now part of downtown Austin) and Zalmanazarán Creek where today’s Old Town stands. San Benito experienced some difficult times during its early years but it persevered nonetheless because it knew that success would come from within – from its citizens themselves who worked together to build their community into what it is today. When Texans declared their independence in 1845, SanBenito remained loyal to Mexico until September 12th when Mexican President José Joaquín Herrera ordered all Texan residents—including those living in Mexico—to leave for fear that this “inalienable revolution” might lead to another war with Mexico across the border. Like so many other ruralTexans, Juan Francisco LopezdeAyala chose not to leave his home country but he did have one request: that his descendants be allowed to keep any property they may have acquired while living inMexico City before becoming Ute/Mexican citizens again on October 16th 1846 pursuant to Article 3 Section 8 of The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo which ended California’s Mexican War (1846-48). This treaty ceded California back to Mexico including parts east of the Rio Grande including present day TX; however LopezdeAyala remnant retain possession over much Rancho San Benito property eastward upriver from missions Concepcion & Zalmanazarán Creek even though these lands were eventually divided among various claimants following Father Comercial’s purchase spree during 1853-56 thru grants issued under Republic Act 2049 & Republic Act 2585.) In 1865 General Sam Houston discovered oil resources located nearpresent day Dripping Springs & leased them out for drilling purposes although no production occurred for several years due mainly to lack water supplies needed for operations plus economic stability arising from Reconstruction efforts following American Civil War.). Eventually surface waters became available sufficient enough for production beginning around 1901 when hydraulic fracturing techniques were developed resulting in large plays known now as Eagle Ford Shale formation conventional gas wells are being drilled utilizing horizontal wellbores providing enhanced production rates making fracking&drilling more environmentally friendly than ever before.) Grant's Union Army in 1865. Today, though its fortunes have fluctuated significantly over the years,San Benito remains one of America's oldest settlements and is still home to many of its original residents who continue to live there today.
In 1836, the Mexican government ceded parts of Texas to the United States in what is now known as the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. The treaty authorized General Antonio López de Santa Anna to lead an expedition against Mexico and claimed that all territories acquired by Mexico would become part of the United States. In 1840, Santa Anna led a force into Texas and defeated Mexican forces at San Jacinto. This event marks the beginning of American control over Texan territory.
