The San Benito Naval Base was founded in 1912 and it has been a part of the United States Navy since World War II. The base is located in Corpus Christi, Texas and it is home to four naval stations: Naval Station Corpus Christi, Naval Station Galveston, Naval Station San Pedro Bay and Naval Air Station Kingsville. The main purpose of these bases is to provide training for the sailors of the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps. In 1941, during World War II, the San Benito Naval Base became involved in the war effort as part of Operation Neptune’s Spear. This was an invasion attempt by Japan against Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. As part of this operation, USS Enterprise (CV-6) sailed from San Benito on January 8th through February 3rd 1944 with supplies and reinforcements for General MacArthur’s forces fighting in New Guinea and Solomon Islands. USS Enterprise served as a floating ammunition depot during World War II until she was decommissioned on November 9th 1945 after serving her entire tour of duty. She then underwent conversion into a hospital ship before being returned to service as USS Exeter (HS-5) on May 1st 1946. She served as a hospital ship until she was sold for scrap on October 2nd 1951 at Richmond Shipyards, California.. USS Enterprise (CV-6) remains one of America’s most iconic warships ever commissioned into service and her story is something that every American should appreciate!
On January 12, 2017 the Navy deployed a supply ship to the Eastern Mediterranean in support of Operation Inherent Resolve. The ship was carrying humanitarian supplies and military equipment to Kurdish fighters fighting ISIS. The deployment was a response to Turkey’s request for assistance in counter-ISIS operations. The Navy's Supply Ship, USS George Washington (LHD 7), left Norfolk, Virginia on December 15, 2016 and arrived at the port of Incirlik on January 12th. The LHD7 is stocked with food, water and other essential supplies for Turkish Kurdish fighter groups fighting ISIS in Syria and Iraq. This deployment will provide invaluable support to these troops as they fight against one of the world's most heinous terrorist organizations.
The San Benito Naval Base is home to the USS Constitution (CV-4) and USS Preble (DDG-81). These two ships are part of the Navy's deployable fleet, which can be used for deployments anywhere in the world. The Constitution was first commissioned in 1898, while the Preble was built in 1952.
San Benito is a small town in Maverick County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Austin-Round Rock metropolitan area. The first settler in San Benito was Charles Goodyear in 1871. In 1912, Donny Cates founded the townsite of San Benito on high ground west of present day downtown Austin and east of Round Rock Lake. In 1922, Harry Huggins organized a local cotton crop and built the first cabin in San Benito while also developing land to become Raytown Village which became an incorporated city in 1984. In 1951, Harvey Wirthman erected the first permanent building in SanBenito when he set up his business as a general store and post office here. By 1978, more than 20 businesses had opened up around downtown Austin with many more starting up since then including several churches (St. Anthony's Catholic Church being built here in 1924), banks (First National Bank and Texaco Financial Corp.), doctor offices (University Medical Center - now UT Southwestern Medical Center) and restaurants like Hooters chicken restaurant (the originalSAN BENITO HOTEL opened its doors on December 17th 1956).

During World War II, the United States Navy established a special tradition of sending gifts to allies after they had been bombed or invaded. The USS Saratoga (CV-3) became the first American warship to be decorated with a Silver Star for her participation in this type of operation. Additionally, each navy ship received two Silver Stars for heroism in combat while on active duty and one Gold Star for individual excellence within their department or corps. In 1995, when Congress passed legislation recognizing Fleet Week as an annual event honoring America's military capabilities and traditions, the USS Constitution again became Commodore George Farragut's flagship when he served as Commander-in-Chief of US Fleet Forces Europe from 1990-1994. During Fleet Week, all ships in US Naval Forces Europe were mustered out into service and presented with commemorative badges to commemorate their time spent under Commodore Farragut's command. Since then, every year Fleet Week has included a variety of activities including family fun day at NAS Norfolk/Virginia Beach; appearance by dignitaries; receptions; Sailors' Day parade; Blue Angels show; buffet breakfast ashore at Grand Hyatt Newport News/Norfolk Island; ceremonial presentation to outgoing commanding officer HMCS Newfoundland by Admiral Rickover before departure home; live music on board various warships throughout Harbor area

In 1846, Mexican General Antonio López de Santa Anna ordered the deportation of all Texans west of the Rio Grande. This action created a great deal of tension between the United States and Mexico. The United States responded by declaring war on Mexico in 1848. After years of fighting, San Benito was finally taken from Mexico in 1853 by Ulysses S. Grant as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. The town began to grow rapidly after its incorporation into Texas in 1855. By 1870, San Benito had a population of 3,000 residents and was making significant contributions to the development of Texan culture and politics. In 1911, San Benito became an incorporated city with a population over 10,000 people. Today, SanBenito is known for its beautiful scenery and warm hospitality.
In 1836, the Republic of Texas was founded from what is now San Benito County. The species of animal raised for food in this area at that time included hogs, chinchillas, and a type of deer known as the "bald eared" or white-tailed deer. Farming activities began here about 1840. The population in San Benito County increased rapidly during the 1850s due to immigration by Mexican laborers and cattle drives from neighboring counties. A cotton gin was built on the banks of the Trinity River in 1854, and some other businesses followed suit; however, most development occurred around Wharton (now part of El Paso) and Menard (now part of Lubbock). The first railway reached San Benito in 1881; it became known as the "San Antonio Railway." The town’s growth continued until 1918 when World War I destroyed much of downtown with shells found throughout its structures. Post-war development slowed until 1960 when a new hospital was erected and retail stores appeared along US 92/US 281. In 2000, plans were approved to demolish most of downtown and replace it with an open-air plaza featuring restaurants, shops, art galleries, and theaters complex which would be home to local festivals each year
