The San Antonio Navy League, Inc. (SANAL) has been a non-profit organization that promotes and supports the naval service in Tarrant County since 1928. The San Antonio Naval Shipyard provides access to military vessels for local maritime activities and events including the annual Texas Fleet Week celebration. SANAL also sponsors numerous community Oriented Programs (COPs), which aim to improve social and economic well-being within their respective geographic communities. In May 1944, USS Ponce was decommissioned in San Pedro Bay, California due to corrosion problems with her keel. Her remains were transferred to the navy yard on July 15th of that year and she became USS Ponce (LHD 8) - namesake of Admiral William Halsey's ships during World War II - detached from fleet duty at Balboa Harbor as a memorial ship for sailors killed or missing in action. She served as flagship of Commander Task Force 63 during Operation Neptune's Spear which liberated Okinawa from Japan in 1945; she played an important role in the ceremonies surrounding Emperor Hirohito's surrender ceremony on September 2nd of that year. USS Ponce was struck from the navy list on October 1st, 1946 and sold to Mexican interests who renamed her "San Isidro" on November 29th, 1946; she served as a tanker until 1959 when she was sold again, this time to Ecuadorian interests who renamed her "La Esperanza". She arrived at Quito, Ecuador on January 12th, 1960 where she remained until being scrapped there on December 5th of that year. USS Ponce is one of only two Ships ever named after Admiral William Halsey - both are currently preserved at sea along with USS Porter (LHD 9). He is also notable for his command during World War II of Carrier Battle Groups numbering 36 ships totaling over 3000 combat troops: thirteen carriers plus eleven submarines engaged enemy forces off Okinawa campaign while twelve other carriers supported ground operations ashore throughout Japan!

On January 6, 1836, President Andrew Jackson signed into law a bill declaring Texas an independent republic under the name Republic of Texas with its capital at Austin (the old Música Hall). In 1835–36 Mexican troops burned down part of missions Concepción and Nuestra Señora de las Mercedes to prevent Indians from becoming settlers there so Mexican forces burned down Alamo on July 6th, 1836 during an uprising against Spanish rule led by José Joaquín Balderas y Arellano as part of his attempt to re-establish Hispanic control over Texas following independence from Spain. At least 70 people were killed when their building collapsed due to fire caused by an acetylene torch used by soldiers while they were looting supplies from adobe homes near Mission Concepción (now Downtown San Antonio). In 1840 Pérez Adobe was founded just south of modern day Commerce Street/Alamo Square; it soon became one of San Antonians' most important commercial districts with stores such as Fénix Brewery, Saltairetexo Libres Ammunition Company and Bexar Mercantile Exchange among its occupants.
