The city of San Antonio, Texas is located in the U.S. state of Texas and serves as the county seat for Bexar County. As of 2010, it had a population of 1,257,911. The city was founded on May 14, 1836 by volunteer soldiers under General Sam Houston as an outpost on the Rio Grande near what is now downtown San Antonio. The name "San Antonio" means "town from the saint's house." In 1848, following Mexican–American War hostilities that began in April 1846 and ended with Mexico's cession of California to the United States on February 19, 1849, General Edmund C. Austin formed a military brigade to occupy Presidio Heights near present-day Downtown San Antonio and proclaimed it "the new capital of Texas." On July 6th 1840 three citizens - James Fenton (aMethodist minister), David Wells (a lawyer) and John Hogg (an insurance agent - later governor) organized what became known as theFillmore Convention which aimed to secure independence for Santa Anna's Mexican-American troops garrisoned at Fort Brown at Fillmore Bayou east of San Antonio; they were successful in getting their demands implemented but also incurred Houston's wrath who refused to recognize their organization as an independent nation until after Mexico achieved autonomy within New Spain. Texas secession occurred on February 2nd 1861 through peaceful ballot box results when Texans over 60% voted no confidence in president Abraham Lincoln's ability to carry out his promises about ending slavery within the state if he were elected – although only 8 percent actually left for Confederate forces prior to Battle Elephant Hill on March 30th 1861 when Union forces stormed into town seeking refuge from Confederate artillery fire raining down from rooftops above).
