The San Antonio Coast Guard has a rich history that dates back to 1875. The present-day coast guard was established on May 24, 1898 when the Texas Legislature created the statutory body to provide for the defense of the state’s coasts and waters. At its inception, the coast guard had six officers and fifty-six enlisted men. The first purpose of the coast guard was military escort for merchant vessels traveling between ports in Texas and Mexico City. Today, San Antonio’s Coast Guard provides law enforcement services, coastal infrastructure maintenance and search and rescue operations. In 2017, the Coast Guard made history when it became one of only two agencies in Texas to be awarded a federal grant for lifesaving efforts in Puerto Rico. Throughout its long history, San Antonio’s Coast Guard has been dedicated to protecting our community from hazards such as piracy and drug trafficking. In recent years, members of our force have responded to numerous disasters including Harvey Relief Efforts in Houston and Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico.

The city of San Antonio, Texas is a census-designated place located in the U.S. state of Texas. As of the 2010 census, the population was 1,512. The name "San Antonio" is Spanish for "New Spain." San Antonio was founded by colonists on May 24, 1836 as General Sam Houston's original capital and became an independent republic on November 15, 1836. The city has been governed by a mayor and a council since 1911. In 1835–36, MexicanGeneral Santa Anna fought his last battle at Bexar County Courthouse against American forces under James Bowie and Stephen F Austin before he fled to Mexico City. General Sam Houston led American forces in the Siege of San Jacinto which ended October 12 with Mexican capitulation and Santa Anna's flight to Mexico City four days later. At least 6Albuquerque men were killed during this final stand at Bexar County Courthouse downtown near what is now UTSA’s McIntosh Library Campus.[1] On March 2, 1840 Governor Gregorio de Bustamante ordered all male citizens over 21 years old to leave San Antonio for good because of “the great moral pollution” caused by Anglo settlement there[2]. This order lasted until December 31st 1840 when it was rescinded due to public outcry[3]. On July 16th 1830Mexican President Juan Manuel Lopez issued Order No., 1092 which exempted from military service any free people over 21 years old who could produce a document proving their acquired citizenship (ejemplo: naturalization papers). This order exempted about 400 Spaniards living in the city limits; most likely including many children born within or outside of the city walls between 1830 and 1840[4]. In 1841 about 350 soldiers garrisoned inside Mission Concepcion while civilians – mostly Spaniards – took up residence around Alamo Plaza across Guadalupe Street from Presidio Gate #2 where present day UTSA stands today (documented evidence suggests that most foreigners living in San Miguel then also lived near Alamo Plaza).[5][6]Mexican troops burned down presidio gates 3 times between 1846-1848 but didn't capture Lt Col Comanche who had retreated behind Eva House after unsuccessfully besieging mission during siege[7]. Mexican troops did enter Mission Concepcion on one occasion in 1850 but left again after being met with resistance from Englishman John Hemphill who died defending building[8],[9],[10],[11]). Missions such asMission Concepcion were also used as prison camps following annexation by Texas in 1860 along with other missions throughout the state.[12],[13] The single largest group of Texans ever incarcerated inside a federal penitentiary was 725 Texan Confederate officers/soldiers convicted for treason committed at Huntsville Prison camp from 1861-1865 although many were pardoned or released soon afterwards [14],[15], although some remain incarcerated today including Aquino brothers Rufus & Josephine
