There has been an army in Texas for over a century. The first units were military volunteers from the Mexican-American War and the American Civil War. From 1846-1849, San Antonio was home to one of the first U.S. ARMY regiments, the 1st Regiment of Infantry (U.S.) Volunteers. In 1851, San Antonio became part of the new Republic of Texas and the 1st Regiment of Infantry continued to serve there until 1857 when they were replaced by Regular Army Units. In 1861, during the American Civil War, San Antonio was briefly taken over by Confederate forces under General James Longstreet before being recaptured by Union forces under General Robert E Hood on February 10th. However, as Confederate troops retreated southward following their successful Siege of San Antonio in March 1861, most citizens voted not to secede from the Union and remained within what is now known as Austin County (although some did). On November 8th 1861 voters in Austin County ratified a new Constitution that would form both sides of what would become known as The Lone Star State’s First Congressional District (later represented by Congressman Sam Houston). As a result, all citizens within that congressional district were automatically registered with either side – regardless of their political affiliation – even though many individuals had no idea who those people were or where they lived! In 1865/66 Union soldiers under General Nathan Bedford Forrest burned down approximately 60% of Mission Santa Elena de Avila in order to intimidate local residents into supporting Reconstruction efforts across Texas; this event is also sometimes referred to as “The Burning Of Santa Elena”. Withdrawal from World War II began on September 2nd 1945 and ended on September 5th 1945; however, many installations within The Presidio still remain operational today including Fort Sam Houston National Monument & Museum which falls within The Lone Star State’s First Congressional District; it should be noted that these installations are administered separately from state government affairs according tolaws passed back in 1907 pursuant to Congress’s recommendation for such a separation based upon concerns about possible federal encroachment into state airspace (the original Presidio included land currently used for airport purposes).
