The San Antonio Army National Guard was activated in 1936. The unit served as a training and garrison regiment until 1942 when it became an infantry battalion. The battalion served in World War II as part of the 45th Infantry Division and the 1st Infantry Brigade, 5th Infantry Division. After the war, the battalion became an armored brigade and served in Vietnam before being disbanded in 1973. In 1967, the San Antonio Army National Guard insignia was first worn by 4-7 Company, 1st Battalion, 9th Cavalry Regiment (Airmobile). In 1988, 4-7 Company was redesignated 3-5/9 Cavalry Regiment (Airmobile) and deployed to Panama for Operation Just Cause. In 1992 3-5/9 Cavalry Regiment (Airmobile) was redesignated 2nd Battalion/8th Cavalry Regiment (Heavy). In 2006, 2nd Battalion/8th Cavalry Regiment (Heavy) deployed to Iraq with Task Force Ulchi Freedom Guardian. On 10 January 2007 they were relieved from duty at Camp Anaconda after a BRDM vehicle belonging to Task Force Ulchi Freedom Guardian flipped over while on convoy ride back from Baghdad Airport refueling operations.
