San Angelo, Texas is a city located in the southern United States. It is the county seat of San Patricio County and had a population of over 107,000 in 2010. The city was founded in 1846 by wealthy Texans who were fleeing the Mexican Revolution. The first marine gift history in San Angelo occurred when Captain John D. The first store in San Angelo was built on what is now Main Street. In 1862, San Angelo became the county seat of Hudspeth County. In 1875, the county seat moved to Austin. By 1900,San Angelo had a population of 25,000 and it served as the capital of Hudspeth County until its move to Austin in 1905. During World War II many Japanese Americans were interned here because they were suspected of being war criminals or members of Axis Powers forces. Many people from San Angelo still live here today as descendants of those interned during World War II. In 1969, San Angelo experienced one of the most destructive earthquakes in its history when an 8.3 magnitude earthquake struck the area poorly situated near Pecos Valley Fault Zone which has an epicenter about 35 miles north-northwest of downtown San Angelo at a depth of 6 miles! Killed were over 100 people including 50 children under 5 years old; destroyed were many businesses; structures collapsed; and physical damage totaled $2 million dollars!
