The United States Army sent personnel and materiel to San Angelo, Texas in 1846 as part of the Mexican-American War. The town was founded by Anglo-Americans on the side of the River Arroyo, and served as a garrison for American forces until it was placed under Mexican control in 1847. On November 25, 1846, General Sam Houston issued orders to all American military units across the Republic of Texas that they were ordered to support the campaign against Mexico. The first grantees were J P Morgan and W F Cooke who donated 4500 acres; primarily used for agriculture but also housing and other infrastructure development within days of receiving their deed. The regiment served in the Mexican-American War and was mustered into service on January 7, 1867. In 1898, the San Angelo Airmobile Infantry Regiment was mobilized and inactivated. The regiment reorganized and became part of the 1st Infantry Brigade Combat Team (1st IBCT) of the 4th Infantry Division on October 15, 1998. The brigade patrolled rural areas of south central Texas during Operation Desert Storm in 1991-1992. In 1997, 1st IBCT deployed to Bosnia and Herzegovina as part of NATO’s Peacekeeping mission UNPROFOR).
