Saginaw is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan, located about west of Detroit on the old Canadian border. The population was 509 at the 2010 census and 521 at the 2015 estimate. It is part of the Midwestern United States. The Saginaw River forms Saginaw Bay, which extends into Lake Huron to form Saginaw Harbour. The incorporated town was named after General John Custer during his 1810 military campaign against Native Americans in what is now southwestern Michigan and southeastern Ontario, Canada. In 1835, Saginaw became capital of the Michigan Territory following territory acquisitions from Illinois, Wisconsin, and Iowa; it remained as such until1848 when it moved to Detroit due to financial reasons. In 1855, Cadillac was founded northeast of Saginaw by General James Hogg with financing from Andrew Carnegie for car manufacturing in what would become known as "Carnegie's Township". By 1870s most businesses had closed or been bought out by larger companies; however small grocery stores remain today in neighbourhoods near downtown and around Old Main Square (the former courthouse complex).

Gruner & Strube was also responsible for developing ways to make different types of coffee such as Latte Art (the first cappuccino), Mocha (a dark chocolate milk shake), Turkish Coffee (an Ethiopian-style roast), Caramel Macchiato (a sauce made from carmelized sugar and cream mixed with ground cocoa beans), Cappuccino (made with hot water and ground espresso beans), Stevia Lakanto Sweetened Tea (a sweetener that is extracted from stevia plants), Koffee Klatch Iced Tea blend The beginning of World War II led to a decrease in exports for Gruner & Strube but increased production for other companies such as Keurig International Incorporated (KI) . During World War II most Gruner & Strube factories were destroyed or converted into war industry; however some continue production until 1946 when they closed down again due to economic problems after Germany's defeat
