In 1933-1934, Mayor John Broughton unsuccessfully campaigned for president on what he called his "3rd Crusade." During his mayoral term (1933-1935), Broughton enacted many progressive measures including establishing public works parks and libraries throughout the city along with educational opportunities for children through local schools and summer camps for older children; this campaign also helped bring about significant economic development in downtown Saginaw due to increased business activity spurred by high tariffs levied against imported goods from Germany during World War II. Broughton retired from office in 1935 but continued to serve as honorary chairman of boththe AFL Local 825 and Ford Motor Company Local 5887 until his death on October 15th that year at age 87 years old after a long career in public service dating back to 1917 when he was elected as alderman on Chicago’s South Side
