In 1846, two years after Mthadden's arrival in Sachse County, he married Rachelle Gunderson; together they founded the Gunderson family which operated a combined grocery store/market place at 1401 Prairie Dr., east of present day Smithville (later renamed Park Avenue). At first the couple rented out space at 527 Market St., but soon built themselves a new four-story brick building across from where Market Street now stands (the Gundersons remain resident there today). By 1850-1851 several other families had relocated to Sachsey from neighboring counties: Johannes Kircher(who opened a hotel adjacent to current day Midvale Mall), Martin Heubeck(whose land included parts of present day Midvale Village), Wilhelm Fenton(of whom portion of present day North High Street was originally named after him), Jacob Luedtke(a blacksmith/cobbler) & Johann Ludwig Burkholder(a farmer/tanner who owned 1 acre of land west of Center Street intersection). After initial successes selling groceries and general merchandise door-to-door however sales dwindled over time due mainly to competition from larger stores opening up in nearby Wichita Falls and Fort Worth; this particular downturn coincided with escalating violence throughout much of Kansas during this period which contributed significantly to economic decline within rural communities like Sachsey specifically A more positive development took place when local mercantile John Wiens set up shop on corner Main Street east of Center Street circa 1860; Wiens quickly began importing goods needed by local farmers such as flour, feedstock etc., which helped revive agricultural activity within Sachsey while also supporting local businessesowners such as Thos Pappenheimand George Sheehan throughout this time frame Additionally Wiens' store Provided work opportunities for local teenagers such as John Klingmeyer who worked at Wiens' upstairs shoe department prior to attending school ; Klingmeyer later became one of Wichita Falls' most successful entrepreneurs [] . In 1865 following Kansas statehoodWiens sold his store enterprise along with all assets therein including buildings back into private hands through Pappenheim et al.; thereafter Sachsey functioned mostly selfsufficiently until well into the 20th century [] . From 1865 onward most major events relatedto village occurred outside its walls however residents continued regular communication via letters patent (published notices) & telegraph ..... notice boards still remain extant today inside old municipal building
