Sachse, Texas is a town in McLennan County, Texas, United States. The population was 6,721 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex and its cities are Arlington (to the north), Irving (to the east), and Mesquite (to the south). Sachse was founded in 1881 as a small farming community near present-day McKinney. In 1907 it became an oil town when production began at nearby Comanche Wells. A branch of Pembina Pipeline passed through Sachse in 1952 and has been used to shipping crude oil from fracking sites in Anadarko County ever since. The town originally located on land owned by John Denton, who leased it from Houston for $2 per acre. The first post office opened in 1881 and was named after General Nathan Bedford Forrest's father-in-law, Samuel Sachs Sr., who had homesteaded there two years earlier. In 1907, Pembina Pipeline brought oil production to Sachse when it connected with another pipeline right near downtown; this made Sachse one of the earliest towns to become associated with petroleum development. The original buildings erected around this time include one of only a handful built specifically for petroleum services—the Petroleum Building now known as Municipal Auditorium—and several rigs were housed inside what is now Central Library building on Main Street during that period. In 1951, when Pembina Pipeline merged with Texaco to form Gulf Oil Corporation, Sachse became an integral part of Gulf Oil's network serving Anadarko County and other parts of East Texas along its 1,500 mile long pipeline system. It is named after Sachemsucht or "southern shrew" because of its close proximity to the Comanches. Scottish and English settlers also located here for a time before being replaced by Germans. In 1935, Sachse became one of the towns that were consolidated into Tyler County. The post office continued to be called Sachse until it was discontinued in 1951. In 1990, Brachman's department store closed down and left an economic hole in the community which has been slowly dying ever since due to lack of business interest and development over the years. The local economy has been struggling as more people have moved away and less money has come into the town overall - mainly from development around Brachman's former site where there are now no businesses or residences remaining standing. However, some have started restoring parts of Brachman's old building as part of their own tourist attractions while others are trying to attract new businesses back to Sachse through marketing initiatives such as job fairs and special events throughout the year (the most recent being a farmers market on Saturday mornings).
