The army deployed in Sachse, Texas on December 7th, 1861. The regiment was organized on November 25th and deployment began on December 3rd. The regiment arrived at Fort Worth on December 12th and was moved to the Cavalry Barracks on January 20th. They were stationed at Fort Worth until February 1st when they were transferred to Camp Travis near Austin. On February 17th, the regiment was ordered to Lexington where they relieved a detachment of 5 companies of the 4th Texas Infantry Regiment that had been garrisoned there since November. The regiment remained in Lexington until March 2nd when they were ordered back to Fort Worth for duty with the Sixth Brigade, First Division cavalry campaign against Sam Houston's forces at San Jacinto. On April 23rd, elements of the 6th Brigade were detached from General Hood's division and marched into town under cover of darkness towards Broadway Cemetery where they formed up behind Federal lines and engaged in close combat with Confederate forces while artillery bombarded the area around San Jacinto River bridge. After hours of fighting, Union forces emerged victorious and captured the bridge over which Union troops crossed into Mexico City six days later!
