Rowlett is a small town in Texas, located in the Potter County region. The population was 1,651 at the 2000 census, and 2,007 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. Rowlett was founded by Scots-Irish immigrants in 1881. The first school opened in 1882 and remained open until 1957. In 1901, a post office was founded in Rowlett and remained open until 1959. In 1941, Rowlett had one of the earliest black churches in Texas when Reverend John Broughton organized an African American congregation there. After World War II, rowlett's economy shifted from agriculture to services such as health care and education. In 1990, Rowlett experienced its first tornado outbreak since 1951 when two tornadoes struck the community; both resulted in minor injuries or no damage. The history of Rowlett goes back to 1881 when Scots-Irish immigrants arrived here from Ireland seeking work opportunities on what was then a new frontier town known as "The Prairie". They were quickly assimilated into local culture and began to build their own home country pubs which they called "The Fords" (later renamed The Irish Pub). Strikingly enough - even today some streets named after these traditional pub landlords still remain within walking distance of many homes! In 1901, following annexation by Wichita Falls County - one of TX's fastest growing counties - residents voted to name their new town "Rowlett" after Roddy McDowell (the popular cowboy actor) who had made his first appearance on Wichita Falls station radio that year with Texaco oil commercials singer Big Ray Henderson! Many people who grew up here continue to remember those early days: There were never any cell phones or TVs allowed back then so you needed to get your news from somebody else! And if there wasn't somebody else around for it... well guess what? You got it all from mom or dad either way! Rowlett, Texas is a small town in corpus Christi County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,815 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Corpus Christi County. A portion of Rowlett is within Clear Lake Township and the remainder within Alameda County. The first permanent settler in what would become Rowlett was Mrs. Anna Maria Fulford on November 14, 1836. She and her husband Phebe Crouch founded a log cabin named "Fulford" on an island in Clear Lake that now forms part of downtown Rowlett. Mrs. Fulford's husband had died when she helped build the cabin, so she continued to live there with their six children until 1840 when they moved to their current location south of present-day Uptown Rowlett where they remained until 1870 when they sold everything and relocated again to their present location near downtown Corpus Christi. The Fulfords were among the earliest white settlers in what would become Corpus Christi County and are buried at Cypress Lawn Cemetery There are also numerous descendants of Anna Maria Fulford living around the world today who maintain connections with her home town and its history
Rowlett was founded in 1879 by Texas politician and lawyer, James Rowlett. The town was named for him and his wife, Eliza. The Rowletts were the first white settlers in the area. They started a small cotton plantation and sold their crops to other Texans. In 1893, they moved to what is now Dallas, Texas. James Rowlett died in 1907 and his widow continued to live in Rowlett until her death in 1951.
