Rowlett, Texas is a town in Waco County, Texas, United States. The population was 5,338 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Waco–Ft. Worth Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first white people to settle in Rowlett were John and Sarah Short who arrived in 1868 from Illinois. They founded a small community on the banks of the Brazos River near present-day Rowlett Heights. By 1870, they had moved to what is now downtown Rowlett and developed a market garden business that produced vegetables for local restaurants and markets. In 1875, John Short purchased 160 acres (70 hectares) of land just north of town on the east side of Trinity River and built what is now known as North Park House which today remains one of Rowlett's most prominent landmarks. He also established Roper School which served grades Pre-Kindergarten through 12th grade until it merged with Baylor University's Austin campus in 1984; current students are located at South Park Elementary/Middle School across Elm Street from North Park House John Short died in 1876 without issue and his estate was divided among his five children: James A., John P., Sarah J., Walter F., and Sarah K.. All but Sarah K. settled down around Prairie View Cemetery where she lived until her death in 1922; however, James A.'s home still stands (now used as office space). The remaining family members scattered around Waco until James A.'s great grandson David Crain bought their holdings back in 1901 and laid out what became downtown Rowlett along Main Street between First Avenue and Brazos River He continued running his grocery store into the 1990s when he sold it to Gregorio Garcia who then reopened it as Myrio's MexicanRestaurant before selling it to Lidia Flores who currently operates it under the name Latinx American Kitchen & Bar . rowlettexas genealogy project website
