The Rowlett Army National Guard Armory was the first armory in Rowlett and it has been serving the community since 1912. The current building, which is located on Cemetery Road, was dedicated on September 12, 1916. It was designed by John W. Fenton and built by the American Legion with financial support from General Edwin E. Lee. The armory served as a training ground for the Texas Rangers and later became home to the Texas National Guard unit 9th Infantry Regiment (now 2nd Battalion, 9th Infantry Regiment). In 1947, the United States Congress passed an act authorizing the creation of an infantry regiment within the Texas National Guard and on November 1, 1947 2nd Battalion 9th Infantry Regiment was activated at Rowlett Armory under command of Lieutenant Colonel Edward J. "Ed" Barton. This battalion served in Vietnam until its withdrawal in 1973. The armory closed its doors for good on May 1, 1984 when it was sold to Taylor County Sheriff's Office for $2 million dollars. The Armory reopened as part of PlainsCapital Renaissance Center which is now known as Gateway Mall. On July 8, 2009 Gate City Logistics Corporation agreed to take over management of PlainsCapital Renaissance Center from Gateway Mall for 10 years starting January 1st 2010- December 31st 2020 inclusive. After yearlong negotiations involving several interested partiesGate City Logistics Corporation agreed to purchase all assets of Rowlett Army National Guard Armory from Taylor County Sheriff's Office effective January 1st 2020 inclusive- thereby ending any potential future military use or storage at this location by Gateway Mall or any other entity!

Rowlett is a small, unincorporated community in Williamson County, Texas, United States. The population was 573 at the 2010 census. It lies on U.S. Route 281 about 10 miles southeast of Austin and 15 miles northwest of Dallas. Rowlett is part of the Tyler–Fort Worth Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was founded in 1907 by Owen Hays and his wife Edna as a farming village named Fort Worth, Texas. In 1914 it became an independent municipality with its own government and schools; in 1924 it joined the Williamson County town of Beaumont to form what is now known as Rowlett. The post office was opened in 1909 and closed in 1971; the last mail carrier served Rowlett until 1974 when ZIP code 77501 was established for all incorporated municipalities in Williamson County. Rowlett's economy has been based mainly on agriculture, with some manufacturing operations since World War II; however, these have declined over time due to increased competition from nearby Austin and Dallas metropolitan areas. There are now no more than six businesses remaining within the community limits; three of these are restauraunts/cafés, two are retail stores (one department store), one is a grain elevator, one is a home improvement store and one is a bed-and-breakfast hotel.) In recent decades there has been development around Rowlett including: A new shopping center called "The Village" opened in 2014 that includes both indoor mall spaces as well as an outdoor mall area complete with restaurants, movie theaters and other commercial uses near Interstate 20 exits 202 & 206 which run through Rowlett along US 281 north towards downtown Tyler/Fort Worth while I-20 remains expressway traffic only from this intersection south to I-35W just east of downtown Ft Worth making this site into what could be seen as an "intersection" or "gateway" for redevelopment adjacent to I-20 between #2 exit road southbound & #3 exit road northbound @ Davis Rd providing easy access from I-20 east corridor into downtown Ft Worth giving much needed economic activity & retail space eastward into Downtown Tyler
