Rowlett is a city in Texan County, located in the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. As of the 2010 census, it had a population of 59,373. The Rowlett Independent School District serves Rowlett and its surrounding neighborhoods. In 2006, Forbes listed Rowlett as one of the fastest growing cities in America. The first residents of what is now Rowlett were German immigrants who founded the community in 1872. The name "Rowlett" was given to them by General Tomer Lappin, who felt they needed an appellation for their new community since they were not part of Dallas or Fort Worth Township at that time. At first all families lived on one farmstead but later some relocated to other farms within Texan County and then beyond. In 1900 George Sellers became the first postmaster at what is now known as Mail Stop #2 (later renamed Post Office Park) which he built on land donated by Jens Rasmussen. mail service arrived here on May 8th, 1901 from Galveston with US First Lady Alice Paul using a horse and buggy provided by Texas Senator John Fenton . The first telephone line was installed here in 1933 by Texas Telephone Company president Arthur Blankenburg with assistance from local entrepreneurs Lewis Hill and Willis Quesnel In World War II bombardments killed many people and destroyed much property including Post Office Park which would have been devastating if it not been for the fact that surplus military materials had already been turned into housing stock elsewhere in Rowlett when war ended. Rowlett is a town in Comanche County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,967 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. The first settlers in Rowlett were farmers who came from Indiana in 1847 and named their new community after General Robert E. Lee's home state of Virginia. In 1855, Jesse Hinton purchased some of the original land for $4 per acre and began to develop it into a small town with a post office and two stores. In 1907, Rowlett became an independent municipality when it merged with nearby Quanah (now demolished). A fire destroyed most of Quanah on December 7, 1907; however, the town's namesake still stands as one of Rowlett's most recognizable landmarks. On February 14, 1915, shortly before World War I started, President Woodrow Wilson announced that Rowlett would be receiving military training at Fort Worth Army Air Field because its location on the Trans-Texas Railroad made it ideal for artillery practice by American airmen pilots during WWI. The first planes arrived in Rowlett on October 15th 1918 and started training there soon afterwards!
