Round Rock is a city in Williamson County, Texas, United States. The population was 36,711 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Williamson County and has been the home of the Baylor University campus since 1874. The first permanent settler in Round Rock was James Hennigan in 1836. A post office called Round Rock was established in 1839, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. The name of the town may be derived from a local creek named "Rocking" which fed a stream that ran through the present-day city limits. In 1861, John Neely Bryan founded Jablonsky's store on Main Street. In 1865, he donated land to build what would become Baylor University. On November 15th 1870, Wacoal College opened its doors for students at Baylor University with Chancellor Moses Holland as its first president. This event marked an important milestone for Baylor as it became one of only two private universities (the others being Swarthmore College) to offer degrees up until that time. In 1872 Round Rock incorporated as a city and quickly began to grow due to development by entrepreneur John Wesley Hall and his associates; this included construction of water mains and streetlights around town which helped reduce congestion on main streets during peak hours A fire destroyed most of downtown RoundRock on December 1st 1902; however, Partisan Rangers led by William McKinney were able to stop the flames with minimal damage done In 1907 RoundRock became an independent municipality when it merged with nearby San Marcos into a new City/County government On October 29th 1914 gunmen stormed into Jablonsky's store just before 8pm resulting in several injuries including one fatal shot fired by Arthur Funkhouser who later committed suicide On January 16th 1916 Union soldiers killed six citizens - three men and three women - after storming into Jablonsky's store unannounced while disguised as Confederate forces

On February 14, 1836, a group of colonists from Round Rock, Texas founded the town of Austin in what is now Austin County. The first post office was established in the community on November 1, 1836. On December 2, 1839, the first school opened in Austin. In 1840, Americanist preacher William Murchison built a cabin in what is now Midtown Austin and started teaching Christian education there. In 1849–1850 The Republic of Texas newspaper was founded in Austin by James Boggs and others with support from General Sam Houston. The city's population rapidly surpassed 500 residents by 1850 due to new development around the railroad station located at Seventh and Lamar Streets. This included warehouses and other industrial buildings which were used for storage until the late 19th century when most of these structures were demolished to make way for newer apartment blocks and other commercial ventures. In 1870 Congress passed an act authorizing creation of a municipality within Travis County known as "Austin". This act provided that "the inhabitants thereof shall have full power to vote upon their municipal officers: Provided further that no township or incorporated village may be formed within limits delimited by this Constitution save such as are hereby specifically exempted." In 1888 City Council approved plans for acquisition of land east of Interstate 35 which would eventually become downtown Austin
