Round Rock is a city in the U.S. state of Texas and the seat of Round Rock County. The population was 146,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin–Round Rock Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlement in what is now Round Rock was made on July 4, 1836 by men from Missouri under the leadership of Major Robert Ewell Saunders. On October 16, 1836, an act of Congress created Travis County and named it for General Sam Houston as a reward for his successful defense of San Antonio against Mexican forces in 1835. The town site was surveyed by Captain James Fenton on April 25, 1840 and platted on May 10, 1840 by John Witherspoon & Company with land grants to George Baylor and James Motes. In November 1840, Baylor hired Jens Jensen to plat & Surveil additional lands east half mile (1 km) to be drained & sold as a development opportunity called Beltline Village In 1845-46 some 400 acres (160 ha) were leased from Jens Jensen to Samuel Adair who built what became known as Hearst Castle which still stands today on White Sands Boulevard outside Round ROCK City Limits On January 1, 1861 when Brazoria County was created from parts of Harris and Williamson Counties it included all present day Austin except for that portion lying east of I-35W including round rock
