Round Rock, Texas was founded on November 4, 1836 by Austin and some of his friends. The town was named for a round rock that had been found near the site of the future city. The original leaders of Round Rock were men from Missouri who came to Texas in search of new land to settle. They met with Austin and agreed to help build the first courthouse in what is now Austin. After a year, they decided that it would be better to move the seat of government to San Antonio so that they could work together. The town of Round Rock was chartered on November 15, 1851. The first post office in Round Rock was established on December 12, 1861; it closed on May 25, 1865 due to problems with postal service in that time period. In 1870 a railroad line reached Round Rock and began serving the community; it served until 1971 when its tracks were pulled up and abandoned. In 1902 a school district became operational in RoundRock; it operated until 1954 when it merged into the Austin School District. In 1912 a civic center was built in RoundRock; it closed in 1978 but has been preserved as a museum which currently operates under different management than when it first opened.
