Rockwall, Texas is a city located in the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. It was named for General Sam Houston and his forces who fought in the Mexican-American War. The area now known as Rockwall was part of what is now Plano. On November 4, 1873, a group of citizens from Plano founded the town of Rockwall on land that they had purchased from the Mexican government. The new town quickly became a center for law enforcement activity due to its location on the banks of an oxbow River. In 1886, Rockwall joined the Dallas Police Department and has since been one of its most proud jurisdictions. Today, Rockwall continues to be a major policing force with over 100 officers sworn into service. As one of only two police departments in Texas with an armored car unit (the other being Arlington), RockWall remains one of the most highly respected law enforcement agencies in America.

The town was founded in 1848 by Scots-Irish immigrants who arrived on the "Creek and Brazos" wagon train from County Clare,Ireland. They named their new settlement after General Sam Houston's victory over Mexico at San Jacinto in 1836; Rockwall was one of several towns established near Houston during that time. Rockwall first attracted attention when it became the site of one of two key battles fought during the Texan Revolution: The Battle of Bowie (1846) and The Battle of Pavias (1847). On July 16, 1849, Mexican troops under Lieutenant Colonel Antonio Lopez attacked Rockwall while it was being defended by militia units commanded by Captain George Hogg and First Lieutenant David Crockett; Lopez's force numbered about 100 men but was destroyed by American cavalry and infantry before reaching its destination, Santa Fe de Bexar (now Austin). In 1861, following secession from the United States, Rockwall seceded from Texas to become an independent republic called Republica del Rio Grande; however, this republic failed to gain support from either the Confederate or Union governments and fell apart shortly thereafter. In 1865 Rockwall joined Baylor University's campus as a branch school; its name changed to Baylor University School of Medicine in 1932. Rock wall has seen some significant changes over its history - today it is known for its wide variety of retail businesses including restaurants, convenience stores/grocery stores/pet foods stores etc., as well as its professional sports teams which include both NCAA Division I football programs (the Baylor Bears) and NBA teams (the Rockets).

Rockwall is a town in Texas, United States. The population was 9,711 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Hudspeth County. The name "Rockwall" comes from the Wichita Mountains which are to the east of town. The first Europeans to visit what is now Rockwall were Frenchmen who camped there in 1718 while exploring an area newly discovered by the Spanish Armada led by Hernando de Soto. They called it Villa del Encanto (Villa of enchantment). In 1836, General Antonio López Bonilla established a fort in what is today Rockwall after defeating Mexican forces near present-day San Antonio and becoming governor of Texas. He named it Fort Bowie to honor his fallen comrade and friend, Bowie Clark. In 1846, following Mexican independence from Spain, Rockwall became part of Hudspeth County as its capital although it remained under Spanish rule until 1912 when it became part of US Federal Hillborough County. In that year a post office was established at Rockwall and continued operation until 1951 when it was discontinued due to lack of mail service between Hudspeth County and Austin proper. A small community developed around the post office but declined after World War II becauserockWall lacked an airport or other means for international flights officialy opened in 1946 and served as both local airport and stop on I-35W during rush hours; however passenger activity soon dropped off due to competition from Austin's nearby Travis Air Force Base with more efficient facilities including runways , terminals, baggage handling areas . By 1972 only one hangar remained open - used for storage by the fire department during summer months - with all commercial buildings having been vacated or replaced by private homes since then ; however remnants can still be seen along Airport Road which once connected downtown with ranching villages Northwest of town north towards Kerrville . A new shopping mall has recently been built on parts of former fire station property across Highway 281 from downtown which will have restaurants , movie theaters , etc., making Rockwall again a center for commerce .

The City of Rockwall was founded on July 1, 1856 by Scots-Irish immigrants as a small agricultural town named for its location in an outcrop of limestone hills about two miles east of Fort Sam Houston. In 1861, Rockwall became the capital of Texas and was renamed Austin after Confederate General Robert E. Lee's retreat from Fredericksburg in Virginia that year. The first hospital in Austin opened at 5th and Lamar Streets in 1865, just one block west of where Rockwall would later stand. By 1870, over 20 businesses had been established in what would become Rockwall including three cotton ginners and four hatters shops along 6th Street between Richards and San Felipe Streets The American Civil War began with Confederate forces attacking Fort Sumter near Mobile Alabama on April 12, 1861 On May 14th, 1861 General Robert E. Lee issued a proclamation ordering all men within five miles (8 km) to assemble at Monterey Point on Corpus Christi Island to resist any Union attempt to take control of that port located less than 10 miles (16 km) from Richmond Virginia This order caused an uproar among many Texans who saw this as another attempt by Northern abolitionists to retake their home state At 2 pm on May 17th Confederate troops under Brigadier General James Longstreet attacked Union forces entrenched around Petersburg Virginia becoming known as Bloody Friday As a result of this attack nearly 400 soldiers were killed with more than 3 thousand captured including most importantly Lieutenant Colonel James Longstreet who would go on to lead Confederate efforts during the Battle for Petersburg
