The Rockwall National Guard was activated on November 15, 1917 as part of the United States entry into World War I. The unit officially disbanded on September 30, 1946. On December 1, 1947 the Rockwall National Guard re-activated and was redesignated the 9th Infantry Division. The division did not see combat in World War II but saw service in Korea and Vietnam. In 1971 the division was disbanded and its assets were transferred to the Texas Military Forces. In 1984 the 9th Infantry Division's colors were retired by President Reagan and placed in storage at Fort Worth Army Depot where they remained until being donated to the Rockwall National Guard on July 10, 1987. The full title of this donation is "9th Infantry Divisions Colors - donated to the Rockwall National Guard". As of 2016 they are still stored at Fort Worth Army Depot.

The unit was activated for duty inactivated on Feb. 14, 1958 when the United States Armistice Agreement ended World War II and all military forces were disbanded except for the Texas National Guard at Fort Worth Federal Reserve Center
Rockwall is a small town in Hudspeth County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Houston–The Woodlands–Sugar Land metropolitan area. The Rockwall community developed on the west side of the Hill Country during the 19th century as a result of its location on a major stagecoach route from Austin to San Antonio and Mexico City. A post office was established in 1879, and by 1889, Rockwall had become an important commercial center due to its railroad connection and abundant agricultural production. In 1928, Rockwall became a municipality when it merged with neighboring towns Haskell and Sweetwater. During World War II, many soldiers who served in the USAAF's Ninth Air Force were stationed at Grand Prairie Municipal Airport east of Rockwall. This gave rise to the name "Grand Prairie Army Airfield" for this airport until it was renamed Grand Prairie International Airport in 1973. The original buildings that remain at GRAA are now used as tourist attractions called "The Flying Fortress Museum." The act also empowered Provincial Governors with authority to raise cavalry and artillery regiments for service in the militia.
