Rockwall is a small town in Johnson County, Texas, located about 25 miles east of Dallas and about 20 miles west of Fort Worth. The population was 2,873 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area. The first coffee beans were roasted in 1872 by an American named John McLaughlin. In 1925, Roberto Clemente founded his own roasting company in Rockwall, which became known as Clemente Coffee Roasters. Clemente was well-known for his iced coffee drinks, which are now popular all over the world. In 1957, Don Freeman started brewing coffee at his home near the junction of US-69 and I-45 in Rockwall. From that point on, many local businesses followed Freeman's lead and began to sell their own roasted coffee products. This led to what is now called "artisan" coffee culture in Rockwall–a term that has been used for various types of local businesses from grocery stores to restaurants to convenience stores). In 1978, Bob Menard opened Menard's Bakery & Coffee House in Rocksville with the goal of providing a quality cup of coffee every day for customers throughout Johnson County. The first white people to ever live in Rockwall County arrived in 1836. The first post office was established in 1837, and the county was organized on November 1, 1876. In 1907, the Texas Railroad Commission approved a plan for Rockwall to be built as a transportation center. As a result, the population of Rockwall grew from 3,000 in 1890 to over 50,000 by 1910. The construction of the Rockwall-San Antonio Railway began in 1912 and completed in 1914. That same year, the first store opened in Rockwall when J.C. Penney moved from Fort Worth to begin selling goods at what is now Park Place Shopping Center.
