Robstown is a small town in Vernon County, Texas, United States. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth Metroplex. The Robstown Historic District includes much of the downtown area and portions of the east side of town. The first settlers in Robstown were farmers who arrived in 1872. They operated a millinery business and raised cotton on their farmstead until 1893 when they built a small frame schoolhouse to serve their community. In 1907, they erected a new schoolhouse which still stands today. In 1918, Ernest Witherspoon opened his grocery store in downtown Robstown and soon became known for his fresh produce and seafood items. He anchored what would become an important local business district that stretched from Commerce Street east to Interstate 10 bisecting Robbieville Road between Robinson Avenue and I-10 East/West Freeways. His store remain open today as one of Vernon County's most significant businesses throughout its history. In 1954, Vernon County voters passed an ordinance authorizing the erection of a county jail which would be located south of town on McLennan Boulevard within the boundaries established by that year's annexation of Arlington County by then-Texas Governor John Connally as part of the larger Red River Valley Project statewide effort to create more centralized government control over rural areas across Texas during the post-World War II period. Robstown is located in Hidalgo County, Texas, and was founded in 1836. The town originally consisted of only a few hundred people, but it grew rapidly over the next several years due to its location on the Mexican-American border and its importance as a transportation hub. In 1848, Robstown became the capital of Hidalgo County after it was chosen by the county board of directors. In 1850, Robstown was also named one of thirteen townships in Texas created as part of the Compromise of 1850. By 1870, Robstown had grown to include more than 5,000 residents. Over time, Robstown became an important center for trade and commerce throughout northern Mexico and Central America. In 1907, Robtowns post office closed operations because mail delivery had become too expensive to maintain. However, during World War II, the town remained active as a military base and production center for munitions products. After the war ended in 1945, most of the factory buildings were sold off and replaced with new housing developments. Today, Robstown is a small community that retains a strong sense of community involvement despite its remote location.
