They named their new community after Robert Johnston, a general in the Mexican-American War who had been taken prisoner at Palo Alto Pass. In 1892 the Beavers donated land to create an Agricultural School which taught school until 1951 when it closed due to budget cuts by then Governor Phil Gramm. The current school building was completed in 1953 and serves as both the Administration Building for the School District #5 and also houses classrooms used by various other local schools including Hunter High School which opened in 1966 adjacent to the Administration Building. The town's economy was based on agriculture until about 1960 when there was a large commercial development located just east of town near Interstate 35W known as "the ring". This development included several large stores, a movie theater and numerous homes. After that time most of the growth in Robstown has come from residential developments such as those aforementioned since traffic congestion on I-35W has made it difficult to find much business activity within walking distance of any real estate complex these days - even though many people continued to live here through World War II when I-35W was more congested than now!
