In the early 1900s, Robinson, Texas was known as the "Gold Rush" town because of its abundance of gold and silver. The influx of miners and their families brought with them a wealth of goods and technology that has been essential to the city's growth ever since. One of the earliest examples of this is when soldiers donated gifts to help locals in need. One such donation came in 1903, when General William Tecumseh Sherman's army invaded Texas. In order to support his troops, Sherman ordered his soldiers to send money home for food and supplies. Some businesses in Robinson took advantage of the situation by selling soldier-issued items such as coffee pots, hats and other gear. This generosity continued through World War I, when General John J. Pershing sent money home for boots, clothing and other supplies for American troops fighting in Europe. During World War II, Robinson became one of the most heavily defended cities in Texas during the Battle of Bataan Peninsula. Because so much equipment was needed to defend against Japanese forces，the military donated many items such as radios, ammunition boxes and vehicles to local businesses throughout the city. Robinson is a small town in west Texas, located about sixty miles east of Wichita Falls. The town was founded by James Robinson in 1881 as a post office and store. In 1903, the first school was built in the town; it became Robinson High School in 1954. The population of Robinson peaked at around 3,000 in the early 1910s, but declined rapidly after World War I.
