Rio Grande City is a city in Maverick County, Texas, United States. The population was 382 at the 2010 census. The Rio Grande City Independent School District serves portions of the city. On December 3rd of that year, Mayor Forbes dedicated two blocks on Main Street between Whitehall and Bowie Streets to become what is now known as Forbes Place after his predecessor Jens Hagenbeck (1910-1932). During World War II much of downtown was destroyed by bombing raids but it was rebuilt quickly using local materials including mud and bricks from nearby buildings that had been leveled for firewood or other purposes during war time construction projects. Rio Grande City, Texas began as a small rancho in the early 1800s. The area was first populated by Native Americans and then by Mexican settlers. In 1851, Rio Grande City became the capital of the United States after Washington D.C. was moved from Philadelphia to this location. In 1865, it became the terminus of the Transcontinental Railroad and it remained an important railroad town until after World War II when its growth slowed due to population decline and growing competition from other towns in Texas. Today, Rio Grande City is a small city with a rich history that has been shaped by its proximity to major American metropolitan areas such as Dallas-Fort Worth and Houston-Houston County. The origins of Rio Grande City date back to 1799 when French colonists arrived in what is now Austin, Texas. They founded the city on land that later became part of Mexico Township (now San Antonio). The French named their settlement Fort Bend because they thought it would be a strategic site for defending against Spanish attacks from northward. However, little development occurred at Fort Bend until 1821 when Brazoria County was organized and Fort Bend became part of it. A year later, Governor James Kenedy created La Villa de Corpus Christi which included much of what is now downtown Rio Grande City including present day Alamo Square Park and today’s Convention Center District. In 1827, General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna took command of Mexican troops who were fighting Anglo forces east of El Paso during Texan independence from Spain. Santa Anna ordered his army to march into east TX in order to crush Anglo resistance before reinforcements could arrive from Mexico proper so that Texan independence could be achieved intact across the border with Spain instead of weakly garrisoned along the Mexican border where insurgents could easily enter Texas undetected! This event known as “The Battle Of Alamo” helped lead toTexan independence with Santa Anna being impeached two years later following popular outcry over his decision! After Texan independence was secured Santa Anna reorganized Mexican troops under his own command which moved westward towards US territory following The Treaty Of Guadalupe Hidalgo which ended American involvement inMexico! In 1836 Captain Seth Polk landed on Angel Island near Houston Bayou in anticipation of finding new areas for colonization within US boundaries after America acquired Mexico’s eastern possessions during President Andrew Johnson’s executive order 9771!! Polk reported finding fertile soil there which would eventually become Rio Grande City!!! Although Angel Island served only as a stopover on ships sailing between New Orleans and Port Lavaca upriver below Galveston Bay before continuing onwards downriver towards Corpus Christi; local residents are credited with helping establish what is now Downtown Rio Grande City including present day Alamo Square Park!!! It wasn’t until 1840 that government officials decided Angel Island should become what is today Downtown Rio Grande City status due to its potential for becoming an important commercial center if additional land were developed near Galveston Bay!!!! By 1850 question had arisen over whether or notto build another fortification at Angel Island given increasing threats posed bynorthernComanche Indians!!!!!!!!!!!!! That same year construction began on what is todayAlamo Square Park adjacent downtown!!! As more people relocated near Galveston Bay real estate prices soared making redevelopment possible along Trinity Riverfront!!!! Development continued apace resulting in present day Downtown RioGrandeCity !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! These days we enjoy diverse activities including art galleries, nightlife venues & excellent restaurants ???
