Rio Grande City, Texas is a city in Hudspeth County, Texas, United States. The population was 567 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. Rio Grande City was founded as a cattle town in 1872 by James A. Hinton and his family. The town became a railroad center with the arrival of the Santa Fe Railroad in 1887. By 1923, Rio Grande City had become an important cultural and commercial center for southwestern Texas due to its close proximity to Mexico and its oil industry. In 1960, Rio Grande City was designated a national community by President John F Kennedy because of its importance as an American steel manufacturing center during World War II. The original settlers in what is now Rio Grande City were Mormon missionaries from Illinois who arrived in 1871 on horseback across the US–Mexico border. They named their new settlement after Stonewall Jackson's Creek which they crossed near present-day Rochelle, New Mexico while traveling south on their way to help defeat Mexican forces at Buena Vista Canyon on November 6, 1861. The Mormons left after two years but replaced by others who also came from Illinois: brothers George W. Smith and Lorenzo Snow; father Brigham Young; mother Lillie Whitney; brother Edward Cranch; Willard Richards (1848-1924); Solomon Northrup (1857-1925); and William Tynan (1863-1937).
