The history of these businesses goes back to the early 1900s when a small group of businessmen and entrepreneurs started selling coffee from their homes. The business grew rapidly and soon had outposts throughout Texas and Mexico. In 1938, Bemis opened a second store in Dallas, Texas. Over time, he became known as one of Houston’s most influential business leaders. He also developed a successful career as an entrepreneur in sugar production. In the 1950s, Harry Bemis’ son, Floyd Bemis Jr., took over the family business. At this point, the company was renamed “Bemis Coffee Company” and quickly became one of Houston’s top restaurant leaders. In 1984, Floyd Bemis Sr.'s death created a leadership vacuum at the helm of the company; however, his son Floyd Jr.) filled that role successfully for several years before retiring in 1992 to focus on his other interests within society (ie philanthropy). After retirement from running Bemis Coffee Company, Floyd Jnr.'s wife Donna decided to open her own business called "Donna's Gourmet Coffee." This store quickly gained popularity due to its innovative menu items such as fresh-baked cookies with cream cheese frosting or roasted gayob beans with cinnamon sugar syrup (pictured below). Donna also popularized Brazos Valley roast style coffee which is blended with Arabica beans from Brazil) In 2000–2001 Donny Jnr./Floyd Jnr.'s son Rob began operating "Rob's Gourmet Coffee" which later evolved into "Grommets".
