Today, Rio Grande City is home to one of the largest coffee roasters in the United States, Costa Rican Coffee Company. In addition to their traditional drip-based operation, Costa Rican Coffee also produces ground beans that are distributed throughout North America. The history of coffee in Rio Grande City goes back many years ago. One of the earliest roasters in town was Java Roasters, which began operations in 1907. Java Roasters was responsible for developing some of the first Italian processed coffees available on American shores. Their blends were popular among consumers and helped spread the word about Brazilian roastings being better than Arabica beans. In later years, other local businesses started up around coffee production and sales - including West African Coffee Company (WACO), which operated from 1951 until its closure in 1984; South American Coffee Company (SACO), which opened its doors in 1978; and Justo's Coffee Cafe & Bakery (JRBC), which has been running continuously since 1978. These businesses joined forces to form what is now Costa Rican Coffee Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of J&R Holdings Incorporated. This company owns and operates three stores located within walking distance of each other across downtown Rio Grande City: just east of First Avenue south between US 90/US 80/US 81 north/southwest of downtown on Guadalupe Street; east of I-10 off Loop 610 east near US 87 southwest corner Palm Avenue; west of I-10 off Loop 610 south near US 281 east side
