In 1920 Mayor John Neely Bryan platted what would become Downtown Rio Grande City on land donated by Clyde Kruckman owner/operator of Kruckman’s Cafe on Main Street between Commerce Drive and Elm Street – becoming one of America’s oldest continuously operating commercial strips mall malls . With advances in transportation during those early years downtown business grew rapidly with people coming to see new things and businesses opening up all around town including banks (First National Bank), theaters (The Pawnbroker Theatre Company) department stores such as Sears & Roebuck (NBC Store), ice cream parlors (Fruit 'n' Veggies), gas stations (PepsiCo) and more!
