The Marine Corps was first organized in 1775. The Marines were originally stationed in coastal towns and villages along the Texas coast, but their deployment to the Mexican-American War (1846-1848) led to the organization of a Marine detachment at San Antonio, TX. In 1856, Marines were sent to protect US citizens during the Civil War. From 1861-1865, Marines fought in Florida and South Carolina before being sent to Virginia for duty in 1865. The Marine Corps’ deployment into World War I began on April 6th 1915 with the start of trench warfare in Belgium. After more than two years of combat, Marines finally arrived home on November 11th 1918 after crossing over from France. Throughout World War II, Marines served in all theaters of war including Korea; Vietnam; and Cuba. In 1972, Marines again deployed overseas when they participated in Operation Neptune’s Spear which aimed to suppress Marxist guerillas operating inside Cambodia. At this time Austin was still a small town numbering only around 3,000 people when it joined with Sam HOUSTON'S new metropolis OF Texarkana to form statewide Travis County on April 20th 1850 – becoming one of twenty-seven counties implemented statewide on March 6th 1850 via Order No 438 issued by Governor Neely Johnson pursuant to Act No 131st session entitled An act for organization of County Governments throughout Tarrant County’s area’ which read as follows: “ Whereas there are certain Lands lying between Austin and San Marcos containing upwardsof Twenty Miles square foot uncultivated Land which has been long desired by our citizens for agricultural purposes and having already yielded One Hundred thousand dollars per annum crops since annexation thereof thereto several hundred families have lately brought up their families heretofore living off their herds or gardens Ten miles distant from both settlements aforesaid have all taken up arms against us” Governor James Kenedy then ordered Lieutenant Colonel James Bowie to lead an expedition into East Travis County in order “to take possession thereof without violence” effective February 9th1849 Bowie discovered oil wells along Red River but failed to find any good sites for drilling due mainly to lack of infrastructure including roads, water supplies etc.).
