Ladd of the Texas Division of the American Red Cross donated a life jacket to the Richardson coast guard as part of their lifesaving effort. In 1992, Captain Rick Klinebach dedicated an entire store in the town’s downtown district to selling Coast Guard memorabilia and clothing. It was from this store that Coast Guardsmen from all over the country began Topping off at Sea - a annual event that helps raise money for local charities. Upon its creation, DHS decided that it would be more efficient if the Coast Guard became an independent agency within DHS. As part of this change in policy, Congress transferred authority for coastal security to the new agency on July 1, 2002. Richardson is a small town located in Comanche County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,890 at the 2010 census. Richardson was named after General James F. Richardson, who fought in the Mexican-American War and then became a U.S. Senator from Texas. The first settler in Richardson was John Hinsdale in 1872. He built a cabin on the banks of the Brazos River and started to trade with Indians for goods he could not find closer to his farmstead. A year later, he married Anna Maria Keyes and they set out to found a new settlement on their land which would become Richardson. In 1873, Hinsdale's brother-in-law John Frisbie opened up a store in Richardsons new town and soon additional businesses were opening up throughout Richardson including one by Captains Wm Copley and David Crockett that same year. By 1877, Richardson had become an thriving community with merchants, farmers, bankers and other business people flourishing around it all! In 1881 Captain William Denton founded what is now known as Denton Air Force Base just north of Richardson on what is now owned by Manor Airpark Incorporated (formerly TXA Airlines). At its peak during World War II it housed more than 4500 military personnel and civilians working at various airfields across Texas providing them with essential services like weather forecasting; radar interception; daylight flying; night flying; medical evacuations; troop carrier operations; strategic bombing raids against Japanese targets…the list goes on! The base closed its doors permanently following the war but has since been reincarnated as one of Irwindale's most popular retail destinations hosting various types of businesses such as art galleries, high end stores etcetera over the years! Today there are numerous antique shops dotting the streets of Richardson while some local restaurants have taken hold such as Baja Mexican Café & Cantina which serves bothTexans/Mexicansand internationals alike along with several Hard Rock Cafe style locations scattered throughout town! Many local residents continue to contribute their time & effort towards keeping this vibrant town alive throghout summer months when many events take place including annual festivals such as Texan Indian Days or Bluegrass Festivals held each falltpenned out at beautiful Sam Houston Park!
