This year, they're doing it in style by having a gun lover gift history event. The tradition started back in the 1920s when people in Port Neches were very interested in firearms. They would come to the town and watch shooting contests, and then buy guns and ammunition. Theevent was so popular that it continued until the early 1950s. Port Neches is a small town in the U.S. state of Texas, on the Gulf of Mexico, about 25 miles (41 kilometers) east of Houston. The population was 9,890 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Houston–The Woodlands–Sugar Land metropolitan area. Port Neches was founded in 1836 by General Zachary Taylor and his army as a station on the I-10 corridor between Houston and Galveston. In 1840, it became an important center for trade with Cuba and Mexico due to its location at the mouth of Buffalo Bayou. In 1865, Port Neches became one of four towns in Rice County when that county was created from parts of Galveston County and Brazoria County. The town grew rapidly because of its location on Buffalo Bayou and its access to oil wells dug by Texaco in what is now southeastern Harris County. The city's population reached 100,000 by 1970 but declined after oil production ended; however, it has since rebounded thanks to new development around Interstate 45 and growth within the local community itself. The area now known as Port Neches was originally settled by the Caddo and Wichita Indians in the 18th century. The first European to visit this area was José de Urrea, who sighted the Brazos River on his way from Mexico City to Texas in 1795. In 1836, U.S. president Andrew Johnson approved a land survey of the East Texas Coast and Port Neches was included in that survey. In 1840, General Sam Houston granted two parcels of land to John Brown at Port Neches for $5 per acre. The town began growth soon after, with people coming from all over Texas to live and work here. By 1860, there were over 1,000 residents living inPort Neches proper; it would grow even more during the following decades. In 1876, a railroad station was built at Port News and business grew quickly thereafter because of its close proximity to major railroads. The population reached 3,000 by 1900; however, during World War II much of the town came under Japanese control due to their efforts to build an airfield near dockside along I-10. During the war many businesses closed down but later reopened; today there are still few major businesses remaining within town limits although some have moved into neighboring towns such as Springtown or Clear Lake since they became available statewide marketplaces with better access to talent and resources than what used to be available within town limits alone
