At this point, port cities like New Orleans started importing Turkish and Egyptian Coffee from Africa and South America. Port Neches is a town in Midland County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,539 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin-Round Rock metropolitan area. In 1836, Captain James Fenton bought land at what is now Port Neches and named it after his native city of Nantes, France. A post office was established in 1840 and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. The first store opened on March 1, 1845 by Wm. Hinchcliffe and Isham Sheppard Jr., two men who had accompanying them from Mobile to explore this new country together as Texans were doing for the first time. The Fenton family operated a general store until 1865 when they sold their business to Jno. Bigham and others for $10 per acre (1/2 pound). The town's first school was built in 1846 by Mr. Beauregard Wittman with money he had won at a gambling game he played with friends William Davenport and John Lloyd Howe. In 1872 an addition to the school building provided classrooms for five more students; however, due to bond issues that year no further construction could be done on the school until later that year when $30 000 was raised through local sales tax collections which funded additional classrooms and other necessary improvements including brick piers around the property line to support larger ships moored there during high water season or when needed for military purposes ashore or afloat with USS "Texas" anchored there while riverboats passed through port on their way upriver carrying supplies or passengers going up or downriver between Two Rivers Landing on the Trinity River opposite downtown Houston and I-35 just east of town center near Harlingen Parkway eventually leading out into open water beyond Galveston Island’s shores some distance downstream where smaller craft can dock while larger crafts such as "Texas" enter drydock not far from shore making landing difficult depending upon high water levels caused by hurricanes approved by Congress one such event took place on January 30th 1886 when USS " Texas " grounding off Galveston Island resulted in large amount of damage done to ship among other items being destroyed including'800 barrels of oil ' worth over $100 000 at that time'. Despite all these difficulties during its early years Port Neches did manage to establish itself as a commercial center with several stores/factories opening soon afterwards before World War II brought about many challenges such as how much sugar cane could be grown here without help from neighboring towns so that Ship Channel Bridge didn't bottleneck traffic coming into town during floods like occurred frequently enough elsewhere along US 44 adjacent to Ship Channel which led then President Franklin D Roosevelt finally solved this problem once again authorizing federal funds - via legislation - specifically earmarked for developing Ship Channel Bridge project which made Port Neches one of those towns actually increasing its commerce insteadof decreasing it although still susceptible thereto because boat traffic became increasingly diverted away from town primarily downriver towards Corpus Christi becoming known then locally simply as "Houston", Pearl Harbor Naval Air Station began operations right next door Fort Worth also beginning operations using surplus Army barracks previously used by Navy personnel now known locally asDFW airport
