Port Neches is a city in small Texas county located on the Jaxson Peninsula, between Corpus Christi and Houston. The population was 5,812 at the 2010 census. The city is part of the Houston-The Woodlands-Sugar Land metropolitan area. The name "Port Neches" comes from two Spanish words meaning " entrance to a bay" or "headland." In 1836, General Sam Houston purchased land adjacent to what is now Port Neches and named it after his friend and mentor, General James K. Polk. In 1853, when Sherman's army invaded Texas, he made his headquarters at Fort Worths Point on the Brazos River near present day Midway Airport. On November 8th of that year an force including Texans John A. Brown and James Fenton marched through Port Neches on their way to take Dallas by storm. In 1898 a group of businessmen organized as the first Cotton Club ofHouston decided to move their operations into what are now downtown Port Neches and east side home streets such as Coulter Drive and White Sands Boulevard because they believed that cotton would become cheaper in this new location than in areas around Houston due to better transportation infrastructure then existing in those areas at that time! In 1914 Drury Lane Elementary School was built within miles of what is today downtown Port Neches which opened its doors to students on September 17th of that year! The original building still stands today with additions over time including expansions for three gymnasiums (1921), an auditorium (1952), locker rooms (1968), science classrooms (1976) during the late 1970s/early 1980s when school district consolidation occurred across Harris County; an library annex added in 1992;and finally, the current facility expansion completed in 2006! Today there are over 1,000 businesses operating within blocks radius of downtown Port Nechs!!! Downtown business districts have attracted more than $385 million dollars in investment since 2002!!! Added value has resulted from increased production capacity for local companies as well as increased tourist arrivals !!

Port Neches, Texas is a city in Chambers County, Texas, United States. The population was 8,759 at the 2010 census. The Port Neches river forms the city's border and it is bordered by Quinton to the south, Webster to the east, Weatherford to the north, and Beaumont to the west. The earliest known inhabitants of what is now Port Neches were Paleo-Indians who lived along the banks of the Trinity River before moving into present day Chambers County in 1812. In 1838, cottonseed farmer James A. Worth developed land near what is now downtown Port Neches on which he built a cotton gin and distillery. In 1865, Worth donated his land for a military post called Fort Worth Barracks; however this post was abandoned in 1870 due to low morale among troops stationed there during Reconstruction. In 1898 ownership of Fort Worth Barracks passed from congress tothe state of Texas through an act of legislature and it became part of Brownsville Municipal Airport under that name until its closure in 1987. In 1907 Mayor John Fenton appropriated money for construction of a public library within easy reach of all citizens; this library opened on April 1st, 1908 and remains one of TX's oldest open-air libraries today. By 1919 over 60% of Texans were literate thanks in large part to funding provided by millionaire oilman John Dyer Jr.; Dyer also helped found Rice University in Houston (now Rice University) in 1923. After World War II many businesses closed or moved out as steel production increased across much southern Texas; however two local businesses – Waco Tire & Rubber Co., Inc., founded 1945 (and still headquartered at 4th Street and I-35W), and Humble Trucking Company Inc., founded 1949 (now based at 500 S Stemmons Rd.) – remain active throughout theirowntown cores today with over 100 employees worldwide including majorityowned subsidiaries located within blockswalking distance from each other since early 2000s when they joined forces as "Houston's First Tanker Fleet" company! Port Neches' growth has come about largely due its location as both an agricultural center for corn production dating back to pioneer times as well as its current attraction as a major trade destination for goods exported from neighboring states such as Louisiana Gulf Coast ports while also hosting several large events annually like Corpus Christi’s annual Jazz Festival or Houston’s rodeo season each year attracts thousands upon thousands visitors coming not just for tourism but also business opportunities too!
