Port Neches, Texas is an unincorporated community in the U.S. state of Texas, located on a bay on the Gulf of Mexico just east of Corpus Christi. The original area that became Port Neches was settled by Spanish colonists in 1759 as part of the San Antonio Missions project. In 1934, an oil well was drilled near Port Neches and production began soon afterward. This led to increased businesses and jobs around town as many locals started their own businesses to support themselves during this time period. In 1945, World War II began and because of this, many factories closed down within Galveston County which caused some decline for local economies however Port Neches saw significant growth during this time as many new businessesopened up including several hotels, restaurants and stores which helped to revitalize downtown areas throughout the county The economy has slowly begun to revive with more businesses opening up since 2007 finally leading to an increase in jobs over the last few years .
