On July 20, 1961, the U.S. Air Force deployed a gift to Port Neches, Texas in commemoration of the city's sesquicentennial celebration. The gift was a Boeing 727-200T jet airliner arrived from Wichita, Kansas and was christened "The Eagle" byLt. Col. Leroy Jethro Gibbs Jr., Commander USAF Materiel Command at Joint Base Lewis-McChord (JBLM). The plane served as a troop transport for the 198th Airlift Squadron stationed at Groom Lake AFB until its retirement on October 31, 1993. The 199th Airlift Squadron is currently using the "Eagle" as their primary aircraft for airlift operations out of JBLM. It has been noted that this particular airplane has had many years of service compared to other Wing jets or cargo planes used by the squadron over its history including being grounded only twice in its career! This gift is significant not only because it represents an aircraftDeployment which will last through 2021 but also because it is one of only two such gifts ever given to Port Neches in our city's history!

Port Neches is a town in the U.S. state of Texas and the county seat of Neches County. The population was 9,639 at the 2010 census, up from 8,885 at the 2000 census. It is located in west-centraltx., about 20 miles (32 km) north of Austin and 40 miles (64 km) south of Houston. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Port Neches were Spanish missionaries who came ashore on July 14, 1836 to preach Christianity to Native Americans living along the San Jacinto River. They named their new settlement after St. Nicholas,[1] an apostle who arrived in Spain in A.D.$1004 with Jesus Christ's group on May 6, that year.[2] Santa Anna had earlier bestowed this name on a small outlying bayou that drained into a river near present-day Fannin College; when Spanish troops under Lt.-Colonel Antonio López de Santa Anna burned down the college buildings on October 25, 1836, they renamed the bayou as Santiago de los Reyes Católicos (St. James' Bayou). In 1846, General Sam Houston purchased land east of Port Neches for $10 per acre and developed it into what is nowHouston Heights—the first major subdivision within Houston.[3] In 1865–66, he built Fort Bend County Courthouse—one of only two courthouse buildings constructed in Texas during Reconstruction period[4][5] In 1875–76 Judge James Hogg erected one of only two remaining finishable stone structures (the other being King's Chapel), still standing today on Colgate Avenue between Main Street and Shepherd Drive just off IH-45 near Programmability Mall [6]. Judge Hogg also designed portions of Memorial Park which became known as "The Grove" and today includes much civic activity including several high schools and multiple churches/synagogues among its many attractions including Beaux Arts Building completed in 1907 by Augustus Saint Gaudens.[7] It was not until 1901 that a railroad depot was established at Port Neches by leasing land from J P Morgan & Co.—later renamed Gulf Railroad Company—and then building tracks adjacent to US 95 so that goods could be shipped directly from Galveston Island without having to go through New Orleans or Houston. By 1912 port capacity had reached 7 ships per day with steamers bring goods upriver each morning while barges unloaded them onto landing beaches below before being towed back upstream for shipment onward night or day
Port Neches (originally spelled "Pecan") was a small town in the U.S. state of Texas and is now part of Plano, Texas. It was founded by Captain James Bowie in 1837 as a salt port on the Red River. The town grew rapidly due to its location at the mouth of the Neches River and its access to rice, cotton, and other goods brought downriver from Mexico. By 1860, Port Neches had over 6,000 residents and was one of the most important ports in EastTexas. In 1861, during American Civil War, Port Neches was occupied by Confederate forces for several weeks before being surrendered. In 1865, after Reconstruction ended in America, Port Neches became a municipality under the jurisdiction of Plano County. The city's population peaked at over 20,000 in 1920 but declined significantly during World War II when trade with Japan decreased drastically following Pearl Harbor. After the war, port traffic revived but slowly declined until it stopped completely in 1990 when an oil spill destroyed much of downtown Plano; however, new development has since resurrected the district's fortunes.
