Port Lavaca, Texas is a small town located in Cameron County, Texas. The population was 1,852 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Cameron County. The name "Lavaca" comes from Spanish and means "place of the locusts." The town was founded by José de la Vega and his family in 1845. La Vega died in 1847 and his family moved to Laredo, Mexico. In 1849, David Waddell built a post office here. Laredo became the capital of Texas in 1861 and the town gradually lost its importance until it was abandoned by the original settlers in 1926. The first permanent settler in Port Lavaca was José Antonio Báez who arrived here with his family on July 15, 1845. He built a cabin on what is now First Street and named it San Agustín (Saint Andrew). By 1850, Báez had four other families living here also: Martínez-Gonzalez, Pardo-Hidalgo, Luque-Barrera and Mariscal-Carrasco. In 1865 Pedro Martinez married Teresa Guadalupe Hidalgo y Costilla which made him one of the original owners of land that makes up present day Port Lavaca. On December 12, 1865 Santiago Guerrero married Rosa Avila y Guerra which made them both owners of part of present day Huachuca Mountains area east of Lavaca River where their home still stands today as Mission Santa Rosa de la Alcalá (Church Hill).ague 2 miles southwest from town line

Port Lavaca, Texas is a small city located in Hidalgo County, Texas. The population was 10,890 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Hidalgo County and has been since 1876. The town was founded by John Fenton in 1851 as a small settlement on the Brazos River. In 1865, it became the capital of Texas. Port Lavaca's growth came during World War II when the Army built several training camps in and around the town. After the war, many businesses took advantage of new technology to grow their companies such as IBM and Texaco. In recent years, Port Lavaca has become known for its manufacturing industries including textiles, plastics, aluminum production and cattle ranching.
The first white Americans to arrive in Port Lavaca were James Hogg and his family on October 16, 1836. The town was founded by Captain John Waddell and the post office was opened on October 8, 1837. The first school in the area was built in 1839. On December 15, 1840, there was a tornado that damaged most of the town and killed six people. The town quickly rebuilt and by 1861 it had a population of 150 residents. In 1865, Port Lavaca became a part of Mexico City and its citizens lost their citizenship. In 1942, the United States Army established Fort Worth Base at nearby Wharton Field to support World War II efforts in Texas. The base eventually evolved into what is now Dallas-Fort Worth Airport. In 1969,Port Lavaca voted to become an independent city with its own government under Mayor Alvaro Martinez Jr.. It remains an incorporated municipality today with a mayor-council form of government
