In 1836, Port Lavaca was founded by Captain John S. Fannin in what is now Austin, Texas as a trading post on the Brazos River. The post was initially used for goods brought overland from Mexico City and other points east, but soon became a stop on the stagecoach trail between Austin and San Antonio. In 1849, when Texas became an official state, Port Lavaca became the nucleus of the new town of Austin. In 1860, following the Mexican-American War, it came under American control and was renamed Fort Worth. At its peak in 1880, Fort Worth had a population of more than 100,000 people. The port continued to be important during World War II when it served as a naval base for The United States Navy's Gulf Fleet engaged in operations against Japan. It also played an important role in developing oil production in Texas and neighboring states during that time period. The port closed down completely after the war ended and declined thereafter into relative obscurity until reactivation beginning in the early 1990s led to its reinvigoration as one of Greater Houston's most vibrant economic engines. Today,Port Lavaca remains a permanently inhabited community located about 25 miles southeast of downtown Houston on FM 19603 along US 281A just north of Highway 614 exit 104B/105A (Hwy 614 concurrent with I-610).
