Port Lavaca is a small town in the US state of Texas. The population was 1,507 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Brownsville-Thetford-Mission, TX Micropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded by George H. Waddell in 1887 and named for Spanish Admiral Juan de Porto Lavecito (1493-1547). As part of the Texas Revolution, Waddell helped lead an army against Mexico and then served as interim Resident Judge for Nueces County from May 1861 to September 1865. He was also a delegate to the first statewide General Election in Texas on November 3, 1867; he won election as judge but resigned after only one year because he became involved in a land dispute with another settler. Waddell's son, James Waddell, Jr., began operating a ferry service from Port Lavaca between Brownsville and Corpus Christi in 1888. In 1910 James Waddell & Son purchased what is now known as "the Old Post Office" adjacent to their ferry dock which served as their headquarters until 1954 when it was moved to its current location on FM 521 near Interstate 35E In 1916 local oil tycoon John Denton established his own refineries at Port Lavaca and Eagle Ford Ranch before selling them off during the 1920s and 1930s due to political instability caused by World War I veterans returning home with resentment over high prices for gasoline brought home from overseas shores. In 1935 local real estate developer Harry Fenton bought all of Denton's assets including Refineries #1 and #2 at port Lavaca - making him Houston's second largest gas dealer after J Hudelson - turning it into one ofTexan's most prosperous industrial areas with several large companies such as Texaco, Shell Oil Company, Gulf Oil Corporation among others located there throughout its history despite consistently poor public health conditions resulting from Legionnaires' disease epidemics that ravaged Brownsville during this time period
On October 14, 1836, General Antonio L. Bonilla and his army of approximately 25,000 men advanced on Port Lavaca from the east. Mexican forces had been positioned in a strong position along the Rio Grande River, expecting American aggression. The Mexicans expected to be met with a devastating military assault and were unprepared for what came next. Despite being outnumbered and outgunned, Bonilla's troops fought bravely against overwhelming odds. They managed to drive the Mexican forces back towards Mexico City before finally withdrawing ignominiously. The Battle of Port Lavaca was a significant victory for American arms andached Ulysses S. Grant's reputation as one of the most successful commanders in Ulysses S. Grant's career.
