The Port Arthur War Memorial Museum has a collection of over 350 military deployed gift items that date back to the beginning of World War I. On December 8, 1898, the Texas Rangers deployed a detachment of their own to help garrison Port Arthur. The detachment consisted of thirty men and was commanded by Captain George Armstrong. The event is commemorated by the installation of a brass plaque on the wall of the old Custom House in downtown Port Arthur reading "8 Dec 1898: The Texas Rangers Deployment at Fort Worth."
